Well-written, clever, and entertaining.
i enjoy this writer it never ends as you think it will.
I read a lot of Medieval mysteries ! From the glowing reviews, I expected another 'good read'. The characters are all shallow and trite. The story line is totally unconvincing. It concerns the reading of the writings of a Medieval monk "Walter" who is also the physician at a monastery they are excavating. Walter describes his quest to find a virgin white bull. Apparently, a 90 year old aristocrat wants one for a male potency ceremony to ensure he will father a child with his soon to be 17 year old wife. All of the monastery is aghast when the only white bull they find is a gay bull ! Oh how scandalous ! Monks performing a pagan ceremony with a gay bull ! I find this all totally unbelievable. I am sorry I bought this book. I went back to reading "Bad Money" by Jason Vail, and "The Raven in the Foregate" by Ellis Peters. Both books purchased here on . I truly wonder how this book got so many good reviews ? They were better written than this book.
Stephen Wheeler writes enjoyable mystery books. I've read 2 others of his. Easy read, with a twist here and there. Brother Walter is an enjoyable prime figure
A great way to pass an evening with just yourself and a wonderful story! Can't wait until I start the next Stephen Wheeler mystery.
Funny, if you are a reader of this period, take a brake from the medieval wars, fighting, politics, etc. and enjoy a good funny read. Made buy the others in the series.
I found this story fascinating because more than one mystery was presented in more than one time period. The author does a good job weaving the story through the switches in the time periods, advancing the tale without confusing the reader. There's also a surprise twist at the end. A really enjoyable read.
