As their numbers decrease and their holdings are eliminated, the Rubys' hope lies in the uncertain return of their almost inhuman monster of a street brawler, Maddoc Ruby.
Rob Shatto also awaits Maddoc's arrival. Their no-rules battle to either abject surrender or death is inevitable.

At the core of most of Chandler's Perry County stories is his Rob Shatto character. Shatto is simply a great story that captures the best traits of the American frontiersman and transforms them into a very believable character without making him seem contrived. This is a boy to manhood saga set in the 'endless hills' of 18th century Pennsylvania which produces a character who shares and intimately understands the values of two competing cultures.... white European and native American. Anyone familiar with the bigger than life characters created by the immortal James Fenimore Cooper will like Rob. Most of the other stories in Mr Chandler's Frontier series will ultimately cross paths with Rob Shatto, so I found Shatto to have been a good first read in the series. Some of the interesting characters in Shatto not more fully developed in that particular story become the focus for the other complementary historical pieces that Chandler crafted around central Pennsylvannia. I love history and this book although not fact is close to historical correct is excellent keeps the reader interested
Loved reading the story. He tells so much of the area.
Chandler does a wonderful job, keeping the reader interested.
Roy Chandler writes books that are entertaining, based on historical events and actual places, and well written. In addition, having roots in south-central Pennsylvania, Chandler's historical perspectives of the area are intriguing and add an additional "spark of interest". So much of the Eastern US Indian culture has been lost and forgotten. Chandler provides an interesting perspective of a different place in history and albeit fictional, the people who helped shape who we are today.
Shatto was the ninth Chandler book I have completed and I have already started tenth.
I enjoyed the book very much! I traveled route 30 from exit 7 on the Pennsylvania turnpike to Breezewood in a tractor trailer for many years and was familiar with all the little burgs and hamlets. My great great grandfather, Jacques Vieau a french fur trader was the first white man to establish a trading post in Wisconsin and was well known by the indians as Jambo. Oh how I would have loved to live at that time before all the pollution and destuction of our natural resources and government intrusion.
